How Are Heat Pump Costs Calculated?

Assuming full eligibility for the available heat pump grant of £7,500, this amount is deducted from the overall cost to provide the remaining amount that will need to be paid by the air source heat pumps customer.

For a typical 3-bedroom property the costs of an air source heat pump would typically be in the region of £12,000.
With the maximum funding grant of £7,500 towards the heat pump costs, this reduces the cost to the customer.
The customer will be expected to pay around £4,500 (this being £12,000 minus the £7,500 grant)

According to Energy Saving Trust estimates (based on fuel prices as of July 2025), replacing an old G-rated gas boiler with an air source heat pump could bring annual savings of around £260. If you were to replace an old LPG boiler, your savings could amount to £700 annually, while replacing an old electric storage heater with a heat pump could result in savings up to £1,200! Are Free Grants Really Available To Help With Costs?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides funding to eligible households to help with the cost of replacing existing fossil fuel boilers, such as old gas boilers and oil boilers, with an energy efficient heat pump system. Air heat pump grants are completely free and do not have to be repaid.

The scheme is open to households in England and Wales, while those in Scotland may be able to get a Scottish Government grant up to £7,500 (or £9,000 if they qualify for rural uplift funding) or an interest-free loan. Those in Northern Ireland may also be able to get a funding grant.

Don’t forget that all domestic heat pump installations currently have 0% VAT applicable, meaning that your heat pump costs will be even more affordable.
