With the recent hike in energy prices taking their toll on households around the country, more pensioners than ever are looking at the possibility of installing a renewable energy source in their homes. However, these options can be expensive, which is why the government has introduced heat pump grants. Heat pump grants for seniors could save you a substantial amount of money on the cost of installing your new heat pump, so it is worthwhile checking if you meet the qualifying criteria.

How can seniors qualify for a heat pump grant?

Through the ECO4 scheme which replaced the previous ECO3 in April 2022, there are a number of ways that a pensioner can be eligible for a heat pump grant. Eligibility for heat pump grants through ECO4 is more closely related to household income than its predecessor. This is to ensure that fuel poor households that are not claiming any benefits are still able to access funding. One way you could be eligible for heat pump grants for seniors is if you are receiving one of the income-related benefits listed below.

  • Income based Jobseekers Allowance (JSA)
  • Income related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
  • Working Tax Credit (WTC)
  • Child Tax Credits (CTC)
  • Universal Credit (UC)
  • Housing Benefit (newly eligible under ECO4)
  • Pension Credit Savings Credit (newly eligible under ECO4)

Another way you could qualify for a grant is if your household has an overall income of £31,000 or less. Also, because the scheme mainly aims to help those who struggle with heating, your home needs to have a low Energy Performance Certificate band of D, E, F, or G, so the new heat pump can increase your rating.

Funding through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is accessible for households where a heat pump will replace an existing fossil fuel system or direct electric system. The heat pump would provide all the heating as well as domestic hot water.

Why is the government providing heat pump grants?

The main reasons why the government has made grants available for heat pumps are:

Net-zero emissions goal

The UK government is offering renewable energy incentives to people as part of the race to meet net-zero emission goals by 2035.

Dealing with fuel poverty

The government has put in place heat pump funding in the UK in response to the worldwide volatility around gas prices. Providing qualifying households with heat pump grants helps the country to expand its homegrown clean energy sector that isn’t dependent on fossil fuels.

Are heat pump grants good for pensioners?

There are a few reasons why government grants are worthwhile for pensioners. Firstly, certain grants can fully or partially cover the upfront cost of installing a heat pump, meaning you have the option to change to a renewable source that might have previously been out of your range of affordability.

Secondly, heat pumps essentially move heat from one space to another and don’t burn joules to produce energy like gas boilers do, so you will save money on your annual energy bills. A heat pump generates roughly 3 units of heat for one unit of energy, whereas a gas boiler produces only around 0.9 units of heat for every one energy unit. This means an air source heat pump will save you an average of £4,882 over its lifetime in comparison to a gas boiler.

Lastly, when it comes to efficiency and longevity, heat pumps can last up to 20-25 years, unlike boilers which have an average lifespan of only about 10-12 years. In part, this is because heat pumps have a rigid design, meaning they have fewer moving parts so there isn’t as much room for damage.

Why an air source heat pump?

Why choose air source over a traditional boiler?

gas boiler

Traditional boilers are dependent on gas which is rapidly increasing in cost, making them a more costly option to run.

outdoor heat pump

Heat pumps are a highly efficient, much greener alternative to other forms of heating like gas boilers.

Low maintenance & Servicing Costs

If regularly serviced and maintained
Both ECO4 & Boiler Upgrade Scheme funding
Due to fewer parts than typical gas, oiler and LPG boilers
Ensures year-round operation
Typical length of warranties provided
